CUHK to increase scholarships for top DSE students

Chinese University (CUHK) on Monday said it will increase its scholarship funding by almost 90 percent from September, to just under HK$36 million in total.

New students admitted through JUPAS with Level 5** in seven or more subjects will be offered a one-off study allowance and exchange scholarship of HK$410,000, along with a full four-year tuition waiver, the university said.

“The maximum total value of the scholarship can be over HK$570,000, an increase of over HK$170,000 (approximately 44.6 percent) compared to last year. Adding with scholarships offered by colleges and faculties, the maximum scholarship value will be over HK$1 million.”

It added that students with Level 5** in seven or more subjects who enrol in the six-year medical programme will be offered a full tuition waiver for an additional two years, with the maximum value of the scholarship increasing by around 18 percent to more than HK$660,000.

Director of admissions and financial aid Andy Wong said the plan was put in place even before the government recently announced an increase in university tuition fees.

“Economic recovery after the pandemic has not been as ideal as expected. Many families have seen a significant drop in their income, and students are facing pressures of life and study. By significantly enhancing the scholarships, the university hopes that students will be able to focus on their studies without worrying,” he said.

The university also said the scholarships will switch from annual renewals to one-off allowances, to give students “more flexibility in their arrangements and planning”.
